It was a beautiful early-summer day, about lunchtime, and most of the campers were eating now. Alice wasn't hungry. If she'd thought about it, the thought of eating would've made her nauseous. Instead, the daughter of Zeus was busy mastering her new favorite game. A game that, as far as she knew. only children of Zeus could play It was also a game that might very well get her killed.
She was sitting bare-back on her Pegasus, Crackle. The stallion's wings beat slowly as he easily surfed air currents hight above Camp Half Blood. Using her only her legs pressed against Crackle's ribcage, Alice pushed her wind-blown black hair out of her face and felt the first spike of adrenaline hit her. Being a daughter of the Sky God meant that she wasn't afraid of heights and had never been. In fact, almost nothing gave her the same exuberant feeling that looking down at everything in miniature did. But right now she wasn't just up here to enjoy the sky.
Leaning forwards and burying her face in Crackle's mane for a moment, Alice mentally steeled herself. Crackle, seemingly realizing that she was up to her newest, stupidest stunt again, snorted agitatedly. Sitting up again, Alice absently rubbed his shoulder. “It's all good, boy.” With a sudden, abrupt movement, she swung both her legs to one side of his body, shot a quick prayer to her father, teetered for a moment, that pushed herself off Crackle's back and into thin air.
Alice free-fell for a moment, yelling at the top of her lungs. The sound of her own voice was snatched away from her almost before she could hear it. Then she concentrated hard on the air rushing past her, willing it to slow her fall. At first it didn't work, and she continued approaching the ground way too fast. Already half-bracing to splatter on the grass it took her a moment to realize when she was abruptly not falling fast. Alice was still approaching the ground, but much slower now. Falling with style.
Alice hit the grassy area in front of the stables and rolled. She ended up on her butt, gasping for air. When she got air back in her lungs Alice realized she was still screaming and forced her mouth closed. Adrenaline pumped through her body, and her fried nerves gave her the feeling that she was still falling. Near-by Crackle landed much easier then she had and gave her his equivalent of the evil eye. Ignoring her Pegasus, Alice silently thanked Zeus, then leaned back and looked up at the sky. She was shaking, gasping for air, windblown, and giggling like a maniac. It wasn't flying yet, but it wasn't splatting either.
